SOMALILAND: Renowned Basketball Player Released From Prison After Serving Three Years

Hargeisa, sample sale May 31, 2015 (Haatufr) – Former Marodijeh regional basketball team skipper, Ahmed Ibrahim Ahmed aka Darmaan has been released from prison after serving his three-year sentence for a crime he denies of ever being involved in conspiring to commit terrorist acts in Somaliland.

The 31-year-old was arrested on February 18, 2013 and sentenced to a 5-year prison term which was later reduced to 3 years by the Court of Appeals. Darmaan was due for release on May 17, 2015, but remained in custody for extra two weeks for unknown reasons.

Ahmed Darmaan is a one of Somaliland’s renowned basketball players. Prior his arrest in 2013 Darmaan was the skipper of Marodijeh regional basketball team and armed forces basketball team, Gaashaan player.

During his career as a basketball player Darmaan won several trophies for Gaashaan and Marodijeh teams.

Darmaan’s elder brother Abdifatah who spoke to Somaliland Monitor after his brother’s release has expressed his delight towards the release of his younger brother. Abdifatah also thanked the individuals who have worked the release of his brother. By Eng. Abdirisak Itaqile.
